I am using my ASOS City Bag with Metal Hinge Handle Bag which I love and think its the perfect size for just the essentials. I don't tend to take on a carry on suit case on the plane as I really don't need anything that big with me.
The first thing I have packed is my toiletries bag. This is the biggest thing in my bag, but even still everything in it is needed. I have packed my toothbrush which is a travel electric toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, body wipes, hand sanitizer and a sample of foundation. As per the United Kingdom rules "containers must hold no more than 100ml" so everything I am putting in my carry on is under 100ml.
Secondly, my items for entertainment. I am taking with me my iPod touch with my Sony over ear headphones. More than likely I will buy a magazine or book at the airport and Virgin Atlantic does have inflight entertainment, so as long as I have headphones I will sorted.
I will also carry on my camera, that way I know it wont be thrown around in the hold hopefully preventing it from being broken.
Finally, the essentials. You know those really boring things like my passport, check in confirmation, purse with dollars and pounds, insurance details (ect).
