Why I haven't made any News Years Resolutions ... and I don't think thats a bad thing

As we are now well into our second week of the new year, many people will be bundling off to the gym, eating salad and de-cluttering their belongings because as of January 1st 2015 they vowed to change their ways and make 2015 their best year so far.
Well there is nothing wrong with this, right?
So why have I frozen my gym membership until February and as I write this eating some lovely chocolate?

First let me make myself clear I have absolutely no problem with people who make new years resolutions what-so-ever I just don't find they work for me.

For me personally I feel as though the pressure to change immediately as the clock chimes twelve all a bit too much. As the New Year approaches and I get a break from university, I will maybe by this point decide an overarching aim like recently I have vowed to try and let things get to me less to avoid becoming overwhelmed in my third year, but will never partically chose a list of things to achieve. And, as the year progresses and as my birthday passes (27 Jan) I will work towards the common aims of loosing weight and continually try to be more organized (maybe one day I will be semi-organized).

Also, on the gym front, January is the busiest month at any gym and for me it is so overwhelming, you can't use the machine you wish and people even queue up for machines only adding to the pressure of your workout.

I do see the merit of self-reflection however. With only 8% of people actually achieving their resolutions, I think this element of self-reflection is the most important part of making resolutions. We all deserve the chance to sit down with out thoughts and look at where we are now, what we like, what we don't like, where we want to go and what we have to do when to get there. Don't forget, this act of self-reflection can happen whenever you want to, which could be right now, 3 weeks from now or even 3 months from now. It is your choice and never feel the pressure to achieve everything known to man just because its January and everyone else is doing so.

If you have made resolutions and feel that they are not working for you or you have already achieved them, don't be afraid to change or adjust them. You are not a failure, only benefiting from your experience so far. Most importantly you have 11 more months to achieve what you wanted its a marathon, not a sprint.

Perhaps the closest thing to forming a resolution for me was starting this blog, but I feel this happened more out of the fact that I have finally had some free time.

Good luck to all of you with your New Years Resolutions, (not that you need it!) and I hope 2015 grants you happiness and health.

So tell me, Have you made any New Years Resolutions? If yes, what are they? If no, why?

  1. I think resolutions are great - thing is people make too many at once, or use it as a way to over eat etc at Christmas. I saw resolutions should be made at any point in the year :)

    1. Couldn't agree more! After all a well thought out resolution is more likely to be stuck too! :) x
